Ellen Kay Duffy, daughter of James M. and Kathleen A. Kelly Duffy, was born February 2, 1964, at Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1982, and then attended Northeast Iowa Technical Institute and became a registered nurse.
Ellen worked in various positions during her twenty-five year nursing career in Sumner, Cedar Falls, and Waterloo. Ellen was active in the Breast Cancer Awareness Association and made trips to Washington, D.C. with the group lobbying for breast cancer research.
Following a lengthy illness, Ellen’s death occurred on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. She was forty-seven years old and was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. Ellen had an immense love for her niece and nephews, and very much loved her dog.
Ellen is survived by her parents, Jim and Kathleen Duffy of Sumner; two brothers, Patrick (Lisa) Duffy, also of Sumner, and Michael (Laura) Duffy of Eagan, Minnesota; four nephews; and one niece.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Sumner, Iowa with Rev. Jim Brokman officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner where there will be a Rosary recited at 4:00 p.m. and Scripture Service held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Friends may also call for one hour preceding Mass at the church on Wednesday.
